November 22, We Did It Again

November 22, We Did It Again

Well, we have done it again, haven’t we?

Nineteen wounded and five dead.

This time, one more gay night club shooting spree,

Nineteen wounded and five dead.

Pandemic of gun deaths, chronic disease,

Forty thousand lost each year.

So, are lives or guns our priorities?

Nineteen wounded and five dead.

If your soul has reverence for the gun,

Then what about all the dead?

Revere what the Founding Fathers have done?

Then what about all the dead?

Commandment, Amendment, which is worth more?

Word of God or word of man?  (1)

The Second Amendment deep in your core:

But what about all the dead?

We have black folks, brown folks, women, and Jews.

Love thy neighbor as thyself? (2)

Are gays and transgenders just to abuse?

Love thy neighbor as thyself?

It’s mostly right wingers who are at fault;

(They think our country’s their own.)

All but white nationalists under assault,

Love thy neighbor as thyself?

If you’re disgusted by gay pedophiles,

What about pedophile priests?

If you worry about the groomer’s wiles,

What about pedophile priests?

Pedophilia is a foul disease,

(The Right courts Catholic votes.)

The Church has finessed this for centuries,

What about pedophile priests?

You fear straight, white power slipping away;

Restrict voting; use your guns.

You’ll need scapegoats; choose the colored or gay;

Restrict voting; use your guns.

You used to cite Manifest Destiny (3)

That doctrine justified greed,

Now Protestant, straight, white hegemony.

Restrict voting; use your guns.

And, just yesterday, we did it again.

Six more dead in a Walmart.

Disgruntled employee in a tailspin:

Six more dead in a Walmart.

Unhappy worker, access to a gun,

No effective gun control.

Again and again, just look what we’ve done:

Six more dead in a Walmart.

  • The Sixth of the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20: 13) and the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution. The Ten Commandments are attributed to God, dictated to Moses.  The Second Amendment is attributed to a group of 18th century American men, many slave holders.
  • “Love thy neighbor as thyself,” first appears in Leviticus 19: 18, then is quoted again in Matthew 22: 39. The first is a direct quote from Yahweh.  The second is Jesus quoting him.
  • Manifest Destiny was a nineteenth century doctrine that white settlers were destined by God to spread all across the continent and establish their culture; indigenous people already here, be damned.
