June 26, Rights

June 26, Rights

Do rights come from mankind, or come from God?

The answer: “mankind;” rights vary abroad.

Could multiple gods explain what we see?

Or, no gods at all?  That’s such heresy!

Our rights were endowed, so Jefferson wrote,

By our Creator; King George had no vote.  (1)

But, we let rights vary from state to state

And change over time as we litigate.

Genders and colors: rights change over time,

Border to border, legal here, there a crime.

Consensus is reached, sometimes after war,

Which may not endure, as we’ve seen before.

Bigotry’s part of the nature of man.

Somehow, we seem to prefer our own clan,

Which means, we must fight for equality,

Or, we risk losing our own liberty.

Rights come from us, not “our” Trinity.

Or, god forbid, from “your” deity.

Rights must include all or they are for none.

If we don’t defend them, they’ll come undone.

Plutocracy means: we’re ruled by the rich.

Auocracy means: one son of a bitch.

Theocracy: means: gods say what to do

(But whose god rules leads to further ado.)

Democracy means a long, winding road.

Democracy means a burdensome load.

Democracy’s nature: continued unrest.

Democracy means: we must never rest.

  • See the second paragraph of The Declaration of Independence… “We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness—“ A lot has been written about the words “Truths, self-evident, Men, equal, Creator, inalienable, etc.”
