Donald at the Bat – Day 915, When We Were Great

Day 915, When We Were Great

Were we great when we had slavery or when we had Jim Crow?

When our schools were segregated, “Green Books” told blacks where to go?

Contraception was illegal; women did not have “The Pill?”

Will we go back to those great times?  Thank God, we never will.

When we had no vaccination, millions would die of the flu.

For polio and smallpox, there was nothing we could do.

But we had no “anti-vaxxers,” since we did not have vaccines.

Thank God we’re not returning to those old, Elysian scenes.

Chorus:

The good old days, the good old days,

Way back, when we were great.

When everything was black and white,

There were no browns or grays.

The good old days, the good old days,

We red-lined real estate;

The Klan was free to ride at night,

With crosses set ablaze.

We’d welcome immigration, although we’d discriminate.

To wops and micks, and chinks, and kikes, we’d often slam the gate.

And now it is the Mexicans and folks from farther south.

But we’ll still take Norwegians; that comes straight from Donald’s mouth.

So, back when we were great, perhaps it wasn’t all that great.

But now we’re facing one more threat to sink the Ship of State.

And, sad to say, it’s part of Donald’s re-election scheme.

For Trump’s appeal to racists violates our nation’s dream.

Chorus:,

The good old days, the good old days,

Way back when we were great,

When everything was black and white,

There were no browns or grays.

The good old days, the good old days,

We red-lined real estate.

The Klan was free to ride at night

With crosses set ablaze.
